Understanding the Mouth-Body Connection
Over the years, multiple studies have demonstrated a link between the health of the mouth and overall wellness. Known as the oral-systemic connection, this relationship highlights how conditions and problems in one system have an impact on the other. One of the most studied examples is the widespread impact of gum disease on the rest of the body.
In addition to seriously damaging the gums and tissue, the bacteria that cause gum disease can travel to other parts of the body, causing inflammation in critical organs and compromising the overall well-being of the body. Some common secondary health issues that can be linked to the presence of gum disease include:
Heart Disease: Although there is no direct causal link between periodontal disease and heart disease, studies have suggested an increased risk of heart disease in patients with gum disease. These studies have also demonstrated a link between sustained inflammation and heart disease, in which same bacteria that cause gum inflammation cause similar inflammation in blood vessels, constricting blood flow.
Low Birth Weight: For pregnant women, prenatal gingivitis (early stage gum disease) can have a profound impact on the health of the baby, leading to premature birth and low birth weight. These factors in turn can increase the risk of serious developmental problems as the child grows.
Diabetes: As individuals with diabetes are already more susceptible to health problems, these patients are at an increased risk of developing periodontal disease. Consequently, gum disease can make it difficult for diabetic patients to control their condition by increasing patients’ blood sugar, putting them at risk of developing additional health problems.
How to Prevent Periodontitis
Any periodontist or general dentist will tell you that good oral health practices start at home. If you are brushing twice a day for two minutes and flossing daily, you are on the right track to maintaining a healthy smile. The next step is to routinely see your dentist for cleanings and examinations. This way, they can catch periodontal disease in its early stages before your overall health is compromised, and immediately begin your treatment.
